Site 71

During an archaeological survey of the north end of Papay in 2014, we recorded some initials carved on the cliff face, ‘LL’.

1. GRAFFITI

2. GRAFFITI DETAIL

We plotted the location of the carving, and recorded it as Site 71. But to think of it as a discrete and singular site belies its significance as a location; here, the carved letters signify the journey to the site as much as the place itself.

3. LUELLE

4. CARVING A 5. CARVING (T)

Different timescales intersect to become entangled in the present, blurring the boundary between subject and object, archaeologist and photographer, and past and present.

6. CARVING (L) 7. TOOLS
